Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or “drones” as they are commonly known, have long been associated by the general public with military applications.  Media reports often depicted unmanned planes, controlled by remotely located pilots, destroying targets overseas.  While this technology is certainly growing as a tool for the military, it has quietly become a powerful and productive tool for other commercial, private, and government uses in areas such as agriculture, law enforcement, hunting and many more.  UAVs have also made recent headlines thanks to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Colorado’s own “drone-hunting” town of Deer Trail.  Dr. Kimon Valavanis is an internationally known expert in this field with decades of experience.  He will explain why the UAVs are so useful, some of their versatile uses outside of the military, and how his program at D.U. is affecting the landscape.  Furthermore, he will explain some of the societal, legal and safety issues associated with this amazing technology.
