On October 20 the long awaited blockbuster exhibit, Becoming Van Gogh opened at the Denver Art Museum.  This exhibit has been 9 years in the making and  includes 70 Van Gogh drawings and paintings as well as 20 works by artists who influenced Van Gogh's work.  These works come from 60 collections around the world.

In the Art Museum's own words, this is "an indepth exploration of Vincent Van Gogh's unconventional path to becoming one of the world's most recognizable artists.  Becoming Van Gogh examines critical steps in his artistic evolution through more than 70 paintings and drawings by Van Gogh along with works by artists to whom he responded such as Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Camille Pissarro..."

This exhibit will not travel.  Denver is its only venue.

Curator Timothy Standring and his colleague at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam have truly gathered the best of the best from museums and private collections around the world.  Come hear about the art visiting Denver as well as an inside look at the work it took to gather this remarkable collection in Denver.

About Timothy Standring

Dr. Timothy J. Standring is the Gates Foundation Curator of Painting & Sculpture at the Denver Art Museum. Since he began at the Museum in 1989, Dr. Standring has served the Museum in many capacities: as Deputy Director, Chief Curator, and Curator of the Berger Collection.  In addition to his upcoming Becoming Van Gogh exhibition which opens in Denver for one venue only in October 2012, he has curated ten other shows at the Denver Art Museum, including Inspiring Impressionism, Sargent and Italy, The Phillips Collection, and European Masterpieces. Prior to his work at the Museum, Dr. Standring spent much of his career in academia and along the way received many fellowships, including The Clark Art Institute, the Getty, and at CASVA.  He has published many articles for a wide variety of journals on topics that have covered a broad range of subjects, including the art collecting habits of 17th-century Roman patrons, monographic studies on European artists, British watercolor sketching, Impressionist portraits, and reviews of exhibitions on works by Claude, Poussin, Bernini, Boldini, Van Gogh, Salvator Rosa and most recently on Caravaggio.  His next exhibition on The Drawings of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione will open in The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, London in the Fall of 2013.  Dr. Standring has already begun his work on his next exhibition that investigates the studio practices of Andrew and Jamie Wyeth.
