The business of generating and delivering electricity has never been as complicated and uncertain as it is today. With tightening state and federal environmental regulations, an aging infrastructure, a dynamic fuel/energy market, the future role of coal has never been debated as much as it is today. Colorado wants reliable, affordable and responsible resource options that will provide long-term solutions to these very difficult questions while providing a foundation for a strong state economy.  This debate has heated up recently with the recent legislation that encourages the use of natural gas in place of coal and Xcel’s Energy’s plan to cut emissions at a number of its aging coal-fired plants.

Come hear from two experts, Lee Boughey and Kurtis Haeger, about their utilities’ efforts to address the challenges facing their industry.

Lee Boughey is Sr. Manager of Communications and Public Affairs at Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association. Lee joined Tri-State following nearly six years service as stakeholder partnerships manager and external relations manager for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colo. Lee previously worked on legislative and regulatory affairs in the technology industry, served in the economic development office of Colorado Governor Roy Romer, and began his career in economic development for several Colorado municipalities. At Tri-State, Lee is responsible for the cooperative’s corporate and resource development communications and public affairs strategies. He serves in several leadership positions with local, regional and national energy, technology and economic development organizations, holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Colorado and a graduate degree in environmental policy from the University of Denver.

Kurt Haeger, Managing Director, Wholesale Planning  oversees the resource planning activities for Xcel Energy, a large gas and electric utility that serves 5.3 million customers in eight mid-west states.  In his 28 years of experience at Xcel Energy, he has managed numerous areas of the Company including electric resource planning, gas acquisition and trading, gas planning, gas engineering and operations.  He holds an engineering degree and an MBA from the University of Colorado and has been an active participant in numerous national committees and organizations.
